काफी समय पहले की बात है, एक नगर में एक श्रवण नाम का युवक रहता था उसका काम नदी से पानी भरकर जरुरतमंदो को देना था, कभी किसी की दुकान के आगे पानी का छिड़काव करता था तो कभी महल में पहुंचता था, इस काम के उसे ज्यादा पैसे नहीं मिलते थे, लेकिन वो अपना गुजरा कर लिया करता था, मगर वो खुश रहता था, मजे से पानी भरकर लता और गुनगुनाता रहता,
एक दिन श्रवण पानी भर कर जा रहा था उसे रास्ते में एक चमचमाता सिक्का दिखायी दिया, उसने झट से उठा लिया, वो सीखा चाँदी का था, जिसे पाकर श्रवण बहुत खुश हुआ, उसको लगा के उसके भाग्य खुल गए और उसने, अपने आप को आमिर समझना शुरू कर दिया, पुरे रास्ते श्रवण उस सिक्कों के बारे में सोचता रहा, यहा तक की वो पूरी रात भी सो नहीं पाया। उसने सोचा के इस सिक्के को वो संभाल कर रखेगा, अपनी झोपड़ी में रखा तो ये चोरी हो सकता है, यही सोच कर उसने इस सिक्के को नगर के किले के पीछे वाली दीवार में छिपा दिया।
इस सिक्के का मालिक बनने के बाद वो बहुत खुश था और पहले से ज्यादा जोश में काम करने लगा, जिसके बाद उसे पहले से ज्यादा काम मिलने लगा और पैसे भी ज्यादा मिलने लगे थे, थोड़े पैसे खट्टा करने के बाद उसने शादी करने का फैसला किया , उसने एक गरीब घर की सुंदर लड़की के साथ शादी कर ली, श्रवण की किस्मत अच्छी थी के उससे अच्छी लड़की मिली, जो उसका ख्याल राखी थी, श्रवण की इच्छा थी के वो अपनी पत्नी को कपडे और जेवर खरीद कर दे, पर पैसे ना होने के कारण उसकी इच्छा उसके दिल में ही रह गई,
एक दिन गांव में मेला लगा हुआ था, मेले का नाम सुनते ही श्रवण की पत्नी बहुत खुश हुई, श्रवण ने अपनी पत्नी को मेला दिखाने का फसला किया, ये सुनकार श्रवण की पत्नी चेहेक उठी और मेले में चलने के लिए तैयार होने लगी, इधर दूसरी तरफ श्रवण उस सिक्के को लेने के लिए निकल पड़ा, उस समय तेज धूप पड़ रही थी, मगर श्रवण लम्बे कदम उठाये तेजी से सिक्के की और बढ़ रहा था।
महल के राजा ने एक इंसान को तेज धूप में इस तरह से जाते हुए देखा तो वो चिंता में पड़ गया, उसने अपने सैनिकों से उस युवक को महल में लाने का आदेश दिया, कुछ ही देर में सैनिक श्रवण को महल में लेकर आ गया, श्रवण बुरी तरह से डरा हुआ था, उसने राजा से पूछा... महाराज मुझसे कोई गलती हो गई है क्या, राजा ने कहा नहीं युवक, बस में जाना चाहता था के तुम इतनी भरी दोपहर में इतनी जल्दी कहां जा रहे हो, श्रवण नें कहा के वो सिक्का निकालने के लिए जा रहा था. जिससे वो अपनी पत्नी को मेला दिखायेगा, ये सुनकर राजा हस पड़ा, राजा ने उससे 10 सिक्के देने को कहां के तुम्हें इतनी तकलीफ उठाने की जरूरत नहीं है, ये सिक्के ले जाओ और मजे से अपनी पत्नी को मेला दिखाओ।
10 सिक्के के बारे में सुनने के बाद श्रवण दंग रह गया खुश होकर बोला के महाराज आपका बहुत बहुत धनियेवाद, अब तो मेरे पास 11 सीखे हो जाएंगे, ये सुनकर राजा ने कहा, भूल जाओ उस सिक्के को, मैं तुम्हें 100 सिक्के देता हूं, मगर उस सिक्के को जाने दो, मगर महाराज 100 की शंखिया ले जाना अशुभ होता है, इसलिए उस सिक्के को तो लाना ही होगा, राजा श्रवण की बात सुनके हेरान रह गया, लेकिन राजा थोड़ा जिद्दी था उसने कहां के में तुम्हें 500 सिक्के देता हूं मगर उस सिक्के को छोड़ना होगा, श्रवण इतने सारे सिख के बारे में सुनकर दंग रह गया और राजा से बोला, महाराज उस सिक्के ने मुझे आज 500 सिक्को का मालिक बना दिया, वो मेरे लिए बहुत भाग्यशाली है उसे मैं नहीं छोड़ सकता, अब राजा उसकी बातों से परेशान हो चूका था, वो हार मानना नहीं चाहता था क्योकि अब बात राजा की इज्जत की थी, उसने श्रवण से कहा के तुम्हें अपने नगर का आधा हिस्सा देता हूं मगर मेरी शर्त है के तुम्हें वो सिक्का भुलना होगा, अब श्रवण राजा की बात मान गया। राजा ये सुनकर बहुत खुश हुआ, और उसे गले लगाया और उससे पूछने के तुम्हें कौनसा हिस्सा चाहिए, तो श्रवण ने कहा के महाराज मुझे नगर का वो हिस्सा चाहिए जिसमे वो दिवार आती है जहां मेने अपना सिक्का छुपाया हुआ है।
ये बात सुनने के बाद सारे लोग हसने लगे और राजा को भी इस बात पर हंसी आ गयी उसने श्रवण से कहा ठीक है, तुम इसी तरह अपनी प्रजा की रक्षा करना जैसे तुमने अपने सिक्के के लिए की है, अब जाओ अपनी पत्नी के साथ मेला देखकर आओ कल तुम्हारा राज्यअभिषेक होगा
